Check out these big moves and bi-coastal openings

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's modern and contemporary art program includes a new series of exhibitions, performances, artist commissions, residencies, and educational initiatives in the landmark building (previously The Whitney Museum of American Art) designed by Marcel Breuer on Madison Avenue and 75th Street in New York City. The Met Breuer provides additional space for the public to explore the art of the 20th and 21st centuries through the global breadth and historical reach of The Met's unparalleled collection.
The two inaugural exhibitions are a major, cross-departmental initiative, Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible, which includes works by some of the greatest artists of all time, ranging from Titian to Louise Bourgeois, who left their works "intentionally unfinished"; and the largest exhibition to date dedicated to Indian modernist Nasreen Mohamedi.

Don't miss a presentation of early photographs by Diane Arbus, opening in July, that is primarily drawn from the museum's Diane Arbus Archive. Opening in the Fall will also be a series of commissioned architectural photographs that document four seminal public buildings designed by Marcel Breuer. In October, culminating The Met Breuer's inaugural season, will be the first major survey in the U.S. of Kerry James Marshall, whose work asserts the place of the black figure within the narrative of Western painting.

Is it a gallery or a museum? Occupying the vast raw space of an old flour factory in downtown LA, the new gallery weighs in at 100,000 square feet--bigger than the New Museum in New York! Approximately 30,000 square feet is given over to roomy gallery space, while the other open areas house a full bookstore and a swanky restaurant, Manuela. This "art center" begins to expand our notion of what a gallery can be.
The opening exhibition, Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947-2016, contains almost 100 works by 34 female artists. It's an impressive lot but note well that almost 60 of the works are borrowed from other institutions and private collections, with only a small number of works available for sale. One of our favorite pieces was a work commissioned by Shinique Smith consisting of fat cords of colorful knotted clothing, hung overhead in a breezeway like strings of giant, soft Mardi Gras beads. Directly across the street from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in a 14,000-square-foot space, the German gallery Spruth Magers extends its reach with an outpost on the West Coast, a seemingly popular trend these days. The gallery represents notable West Coast artists, among them Barbara Kruger, Stephen Prina, Analia Saban, Kenneth Anger and Sterling Ruby as well as local artists Ryan Trecartin, Lizzie Fitch and Ed Ruscha in Germany. 
The inaugural exhibition is a solo John Baldessari show, open through April 9. It features 16 new works on canvas, all with found imagery the artist rendered digitally, combined with painted elements and his trademark stenciled captions. The snippets of text came from movie scripts, the artist says. The imagery came from movie stills that Baldessari collects. Their next show features work by George Condo, opening April 20 - June 11, 2016.

New York galleries Anton Kern and Andrew Kreps will ALSO be getting in on the action on the West Coast by opening a temporary joint space in San Francisco inside the Minnesota Street Project, a real estate endeavor that will house artist studios and gallery spaces. The Kern/Kreps exhibition will feature works from both gallery rosters, including luminaries like Mark Grotjahn, Anne Collier and Roe Ethridge, and will stay on view through May 21.
Along with Gagosian Gallery opening its 16th space, and the reopening of the expanded SFMOMA on May 14, the West Coast will be abuzz. Not to mention that now the Untitled Art Fair has also announced its intention to launch in San Francisco January 12-15, 2017. Organizers have already earmarked a site at Pier 70 in the arts district of the city's Dogpatch neighborhood. Untitled San Francisco will operate on a smaller, more intimate scale than its Miami-based fair, at least in the beginning. The first edition is set to include 40 to 60 participants in order to focus on quality and to test the interest of a market that is still emerging.
